About Renter Cover Lab

Renter Cover Lab is an independent decision-support site for renters for renters insurance coverage questions, claim decisions, personal property inventory, and security deposit dispute legitimacy. We build tools and guides that answer the questions insurers hedge on and landlords dodge: what does standard HO-4 really cover, when should you file a claim, how much is your stuff actually worth, and can your landlord charge you for that repair?

How our answers work

Every coverage answer starts from the standard HO-4 policy form. We explain the plain-language rule, the exceptions, and the test that decides whether something is covered. Claim guidance is grounded in real-world premium-impact data and deductible math. Deposit deduction guides cross-check state landlord-tenant law against common lease terms. Nothing on this site is a guess, a hedge, or an affiliate pitch disguised as advice. We never publish a fabricated statistic.

What we are not

We are not an insurance company, an agent, a brokerage, or a law firm. Our content is educational, not a substitute for reading your own policy declarations page or consulting a licensed professional. If a coverage question involves significant money or legal exposure, confirm with your insurer or a tenant attorney before you act.

Corrections

If a coverage rule, calculator output, or deposit guide on this site looks wrong, we want to know. Email hello@renters-insurance.pages.dev and we will check it against the HO-4 form, state law, and relevant DOI guidance, then fix it quickly. Getting renter answers right is the whole point of this site.
